Transplantation

Transplantation is one of the best options for treatment for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease & End Stage Renal Disease. Patients who receive a kidney transplant have a significantly improved quality of life & an extended life span compared to being on dialysis.

All patients with advanced kidney disease should speak to their nephrologist to check if kidney transplantation is an option for them. The actual eligibility for transplantation will be determined by the renal transplant team at the transplant center.

Wichita Nephrology Group has 2 dedicated transplant nephrologists, Dr. Sreedhar Mandayam & Dr. Aisha Shaikh. They work in close association with the Renal Transplant Institute at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center and are part of the renal transplant team at the institute.

Both the transplant nephrologists are involved in the process of :

  • Evaluating patients to be listed for transplants.
  • Caring for patients admitted during the transplant process & caring for patients in the immediate post transplant clinics for the first 3 months post transplant at the Via Christi transplant institute.
  • In addition, they monitor all transplant recipients for the first year post transplant after which patients are returned to their primary nephrologist.

Patients transplanted at any transplant center are followed by the transplant nephrologists at Wichita Nephrology Group with close contact & communication with their primary transplant center. We routinely see patients transplanted at Kansas City, Denver, Oklahoma City, and Nebraska.
